Geralyn Shukwit

Artist Statement

I love nothing more than wandering with my camera and connecting with the people I meet along the way. Sometimes it’s just a passing hello, but what I value most are the encounters that deepen, continue, and grow into lasting relationships. I am drawn to people from many different backgrounds—through their faith, traditions, languages, and ways of life, I’ve learned so much. Each connection expands my vision and shapes how I see the world.

These images come from a trip to Haiti in 2016. What began as a journey to experience Kanaval unexpectedly became two weeks in Jacmel, after political uprisings altered my plans. Guided by two young Haitian photographers, I came to know the island in an entirely different way. Their generosity and perspective opened my eyes to Haiti’s beauty, resilience, and spirit, far beyond what I had imagined.
