Artist Statement
2020 is a year unlike any other I have experienced in my lifetime. We’re only halfway through it, yet we have already experienced profound isolation, deep despair, anger, frustration, and now, perhaps, a glimmer of hope, as positive lasting societal change seems realistically attainable.
The photographs I make are quiet calls-to-arms; they are often bleak images imbued with the rush of beauty and longing.

Matthew Courtway is a Portland, Oregon-based photographer. His photographs have appeared at Newspace Center For Photography and Blue Sky, the Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts.
