Artist Statement

This spring I visually explored Southern Oregon’s wildfire sites, with the intent of capturing both the destruction and renewal of the forest after a burn. My curiosity was stimulated by a class on forest management, fire science, and the value of gentle controlled burns on the landscape to prevent raging wildfires. Class participants were tasked with creating art on fire, but the pandemic hit circumventing our exhibit. Thus, with spring in full bloom, I walked the streets of Ashland, and pursued my love of abstract beauty, photographing flowering dogwoods in soft focus. My entries to Visualizing include both topics.
