Thibault Roland

Artist Statement

As a fine art photographer with a background in physics, I explore the intersection of science and art. Inspired by concepts like relativity and perception, I use long exposure, infrared, and tilt-shift to transform time, space, and the unseen into visual form.

My work aims to spark curiosity about science, raise awareness of environmental challenges, and invite reflection on humanity’s relationship with the world. Precision and craftsmanship are central to my process, with each image becoming a carefully crafted archival print that blends the visible with the abstract to foster deeper connections and new perspectives.

Artist Bio

Born in France in 1981, Thibault Roland earned a PhD in Physics before moving to the U.S. to conduct research at Cornell and Harvard. During this time, he discovered photography as a way to merge science and art, exploring concepts like time and space through long exposure and tilt/shift. His scientific background informs his precise, graphical style, from capture to final print.

For Thibault, photography is only complete when transformed into a physical archival print, framed and displayed.

He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Clara.
