Artist Statement

These photos were made in the Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park (the City of Refuge) on the Big Island of Hawaii, during a mid-February break, just before the world changed. If you were an ancient Hawaiian who had broken a traditional law and were condemned to death, this was the place to go, where you could be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. These make me remember the last moments of innocence in the year 2020.
