This Work They Call Love walks a mile in the shoes of women who take on the job of raising children but are not supplied with the full breadth of resources required. As an exercise, I set out to do my job, to make a photograph, as I would my job as mother, using only the tools at hand and a determination born of necessity. I called upon my local community for volunteers who would sit with me and allow me to witness and photograph them. With digital files in hand but the photo paper being the metaphorical missing resource, I turned to cardboard, plastic bags, scraps of fabric, and a printer not designed to handle any of it. Each piece memorializes the ingenuity and resilience women employ while fulfilling their work and demand their efforts be seen in the light of day.

Lucy Bohnsack (American, b. 1982, she/her) received her BFA in Photography from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University in 2004. It was here she first began experimenting with what would become her signature tactile approach to photography. Lucy continually pushes the boundaries of what it means to process photographs by plucking her images off the page and rebuilding them on different experimental substrates; including, but not limited to, plastic grocery bags, cardboard, soda cans, a piece of prosciutto once, and many more. Her work is experimental, ever evolving, and highly process oriented. Lucy lives and works in Catskill, NY with her husband and two children.
