John von Haas

Artist Statement

My photography is deeply inspired by the immediate environment around me. The ever-changing light, textures, and natural elements shape the style and themes of my work. I strive to capture moments, creating images with a sense of place, presence and hopefully emotion.

My artistic vision revolves around capturing the essence of horses, the rustic charm of farms, the serene beauty of empty spaces, and the intrigue of interesting textures and shapes. The photos center on uncluttered imagery, drawing profound inspiration from minimalist Japanese photography. I believe that to achieve this every shot must be crafted and composed with careful intention.

Artist Bio

My artistic expression is diverse, from the rhythms of music to the frames of photography.

In 1986, I embarked on a photographic journey, devouring every photography and art course I could find. I firmly believe in lifelong learning and artistic growth.

My work is captured, either on film or digitally, giving it a striking and nostalgic charm, thanks to the unique qualities of vintage lenses and cameras. The interplay of contrast and color weaves an enduring aesthetic. I have quite an old school philosophy - To make a beautiful print, you have to start with a beautiful negative.
