This is Where I Live

June 1-July 2, 2017

This Is Where I Live is a collective photographic portrait of Israel and the West Bank as seen by the people who call this region home. From 2010–2013 photographer Wendy Ewald worked with a total of fourteen different communities, providing point-and-shoot digital cameras and mentoring participants as they visually documented their lives. Ewald’s collaborators included shopkeepers in the Jerusalem market, Gypsy children in the Old City, elderly Palestinian women in East Jerusalem, high-tech workers in Tel Aviv, and students in military academies and elementary schools. The final exhibition includes nearly 400 images, all of which are testaments to the vitality and variety of the region’s cultural landscape as well as the multifaceted nature of Jewish identity.

Wendy Ewald has spent more than 40 years collaborating with children, families, and teachers all over the world. In addition to creating her own photographic images, she encourages her collaborators to use cameras to record themselves, their families and their communities, and to articulate their fantasies and dreams. She has had solo exhibitions at the International Center of Photography in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of American Art, the Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland among others and participated in the 1997 Whitney Biennial. Her many honors include a receiving a MacArthur Fellowship, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship. This is Ewald’s second solo show at Blue Sky.
