Elaine Ling

Cuba Chronicles

January 3, 2008 - February 3, 2008

In Cuba Chronicles, Elaine Ling captures an island caught between the grandeur of old world glory and the decay of the current era. Carrying her 4 x 5 field camera on a tripod through the streets of Havana, Trinidad, Santiago de Cuba and other degraded cities, she was called in to photograph people’s homes, and found an urban landscape that has superimposed the African demigods of earlier generations onto the new world Roman Catholic saints. The images fall into four distinct chronicles – architecture, interiors, gardens and religion - and convey, in Ling’s distinctive visual voice, the silence of places where time stands still.
