Carrying subcurrents of social documentary and environmental themes, Steven Benson’s series, “The Cost of Power in China: The Three Gorges Dam and the Yangtze River Valley” stemmed from a desire to create a lasting photographic document of a part of the planet about to disappear. Benson traveled and photographed the length of the area to be flooded by the Three Gorges Dam, and in his poetic and carefully crafted images honor the people of the mythic valley that has inspired artists and philosophers for countless centuries.
