Abby Robinson’s “In Camera” series reveals a world where traditional and contemporary collide. Lush color images of photography studios in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, and Vietnam build upon premises of traditional documentary photography, but the painted backdrops and props that she photographs introduce narrative painterly and cinematic elements. She writes, “The backdrops, dealing with representations of the natural and man-made world are, in their fashion, idealized versions of both…The juxtapositions [of pastoral and indoor scenes] –along with those of the mundane clutter surrounding the magical painted backdrops—are full of longing, hope, ambition, and irony. Robinson will lecture on her work on Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30 pm.
