Ken Grant

July 3, 2003 - August 2, 2003

Rooted in autobiography, Ken Grant’s 15-year project explores the friendship, family, and working life of laborers in the river trades in the community of Merseyside, which borders the Irish Sea near Liverpool. These black and white images provide a moving portrait of kinship and survival. What began as a way of remembering the craftspeople and laborers he grew up around, developed into a response to the transience of traditional labor in the region in general, and the social and cultural celebrations that provide respite and strength.
