Jo Whaley utilizes bold, exaggerated color and traditional still life imagery to entice the viewer into her composed surrealistic photographs in her “Natura Morta” series. Drawing inspiration from 17th century European still life painting, Whaley constructs still life sets reflecting the anxieties that arc between our technological civilization and the natural environment. By juxtaposing the beautiful, and unexpectedly morbid, or the serious and the whimsical, this work explores the ironic tensions between these two worlds and the time bomb inherent in that conflict.
