In “Kosmos: A Portrait of the Russian Space Age,” Adam Bartos reveals the “cosmic souvenirs” (as dubbed in an essay by Svetlana Boym in Bartos’s book) of the Soviet space program. Portraits of the unassuming engineers, designers, and generals who were the “secret masters behind Soviet space exploration”; images of memorabilia, control panels, first-stage Proton boosters, photos of workers, and a simple still life of a table set for tea at the apartment of a former chief designer for the space program in the 1970′s…all converge to form a comprehensive look at the complex, and historical role of the various players, as well as a glimpse into the cultural and technological role of Russia at the beginning of the Space Age.
