Patrick Sutherland

January 3, 2002 - February 2, 2002

Patrick Sutherland is a British photographer who has spent 6 years documenting the culture of a remote Tibetan community in Spiti Valley in North India. Since the Dalai lama's flight from Tibet 40 years ago, Tibet has been subjected to cultural genocide. These photographs document one of the last fragile remnants of traditional Tibetan society. Sutherland's photos capture the essence of a gradually shifting culture as the trekking and cultural tourism industries slowly infiltrate these remote communities. Sutherland will lecture and show slides on Friday, January 4, 2002.
