Patrick Stearns

December 7-30, 2000

For four years Patrick Stearns, along with 13 other Portland-area photographers, have been documenting the city of Portland using the grid lines and parameters of a AAA map of Portland. Entitled "The Portland Grid Project," this extensive and detailed project will take an estimated 8 to 10 years to complete as this motivated group of photographers choose one grid per month to each document with their own photographic style and vision. Stearns' unique style involves finding an interesting visual element, then splitting the panoramic frame and composing simultaneously within the two frames. The comparisons and contradictions reflect the ordinary and mundane in a completely new and interesting way.
