Maureen Holmberg

February 3-26, 2000

In "Memories and Their Incarnation," Maureen Holmberg explores the complex relationship between people and their homes. By documenting abandoned houses, and superimposing multiple images, Holmberg creates a dense, haunting landscape of memories and past lives. The mural-size black and white images reveal symbols and metaphors in every corner of the prints, creating impacting reflections of human physical and psychological nature. She writes, "It has never been my intention--either before or after recognizing the personal symbolism of the home--to create straight documentary images of these sites. I am interested in responding to the sense of the intrinsic over the extrinsic. My impulse is not to document an external reality, but to explore personal inner truth."
