The subject of my exhibition is the material culture and agrarian way of life of rural elderly families living along the Mississippi river valley in southern Illinois. By looking closely at the material culture of the yard and the home, this work examines the way 40 elderly families have shaped the spaces in which they live. These spaces can be seen as an expression of cultural values, ideals, and beliefs. Eight rural southern Illinois towns provide the landscape for this study : Prairie Du Rocher, Evansville, Chester, Grand Tower, Ware, McClure, Thebes, and Cairo.
