The phrase “in your face” could’ve been coined to describe Bil Zelman’s portraits. Edgy, raw and bracing, Zelman captures us the way we were never meant to be seen. At parties, festivals, on the street, at galas and at gatherings of all sorts, young and old are frozen with Zelman’s off-kilter lens, with little concern for context, personal connection or the emotional artificiality we assume when we compose ourselves for the camera.
Likened to the styles of Garry Winogrand and William Klein, Zelman delivers common people in a black-and-white, high flash, high tension manner – the ordinary rendered mysterious by the way the camera paralyzes time.
