Kate Mellor’s sweeping project, “In The Steps of Robert Pinnacle” was commissioned
by the European Festival of Photography and the Digital Image to document European
spa towns. Using a pinhole camera, Mellor based the project upon the career
of a fictional landscape painter, using the construct of his life, habits,
and journal to frame the narrative thread running throughout and containing the
concept. She writes, “ I decided to explore our notions of history for
this commission and realized there was a strong parallel between history and
photography, that they have the same relationship to the ‘real.’ I worked
with a mixture of fact and fiction—providing excerpts from Pinnacle’s journals
which are hung alongside the images.”
