In Annu Matthew’s “An Indian from India” series, Matthew compares how nineteenth century photographers of Native Americans viewed the “primitive natives,” with the colonial gaze of nineteenth century British photographers working in India. An immigrant from India herself, she is often questioned, living in the States, where she is “really from.” In this portfolio she pairs self-portraits alongside these nineteenth century portraits, resulting in a thoughtful exploration of discrimination, credibility, stereotypes, and assumptions.
