Every other spring an international set of photographers and reviewers gather in Portland, Oregon for a week-long celebration of photography organized by the local non-profit organization, Photolucida. Their mission: an increased understanding of the world through photography. By promoting in-depth, informed, and supportive dialogue between photographers, gallery owners, and publishers, Photolucida promotes the culture of photography.

In early 2004 the group launched an annual juried competition, Critical Mass, where entrants were invited to submit 10 images of their work, which was then included on a CD-ROM presented to an international list of curators for voting. Over 600 photographers from around the world submitted work and the top-10 vote getters earned a spot in the Critical Mass traveling show. Blue Sky Gallery is the first venue, launching the exhibit. The show will then travel over the next 15 months throughout the United States.
