Henrik Kam's color images of San Francisco Bayfront interiors also
explore the concept of preservation, with a more direct statement
on environmental abuse. Kam uses color to frame and abstract the
dilapidated and abandoned storage rooms, once used by the US Navy for
toxic research and repair work during the Cold War. Decades of careless
handling and disposal of heavy metals and low level radioactive materials
has left behind a multimillion dollar clean up effort at one of the largest
Superfund sites in the country, next to one of the poorest neighborhoods in
San Francisco.
