Artist
Nathan Lyons is a truly ground-breaking photographer who has exerted a profound
effect on the field of photography for more than 40 years. He is a pioneering
curator, educator, author, and arts administrator. He is the founder and
director of the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, was the
first chairman of the Society for Photographic Education (1963), and served
as Associate Director and Curator of Photography at George Eastman House
during the 1960's. He was a founding trustee of the New York Foundation
for the Arts (NYFA) and served as chair from 1976 to 1993, received several
honors from NEA, was visiting professor at MIT, is a member of the George
Eastman House acquisitions committee and holds an honorary doctorate in
fine arts from Corcoran School of Art. Last year, his second brilliant book,
Riding 1st Class on the Titanic!, was published and he received the ICP
Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Lyons will also give an informal "chat" on his work on Tuesday,
October 2 at 7:30 pm at Lincoln Hall at PSU. This discussion is a kick off
event to PhotoAmericas 2001.
